Daniel Cardenal DiNardo
Arzobispo de Galveston-Houston

From the Pastor’s Desk – Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

My dear friends in Christ,

In the Gospel of Jesus issues a call, to the first Apostles. He simply says: “Follow Me.” That call will eventually prepare them for their role as Shepherds of the Church.

It is a call to all of us to respond with generosity and commitment to our baptism. Each year the Diocesan Service Fund (DSF) operates in our local Church of Galveston-Houston to help her carry out the task of teaching and sanctifying. The sixty-plus ministries under its umbrella, DSF brings the needed financial resources to carry out those same ministries.

DSF also brings an answer to the hopes and needs of so many in our archdiocese. Few of the programs that receive support through DSF: Sacramental preparation classes, Special Youth Services for at risk-youth, disaster relief and food programs for the poorest among us, the Catholic Chaplin Corps providing comfort and strength to thousands of hospitalized Catholics and the Pope John XXIII retirement residence for our faithful priests at St. Dominic Village.

The gifts given are gifts to be shared, in time, talent and treasure. I invite you to be involved actively this year in our DSF summons and to be generous in your response.

Your faithful shepherd,
Daniel Cardinal DiNardo
Archbishop of Galveston-Houston

Saint Katharine Drexel in top three largest groups attending the Texas Rally for Life

Between 45 and 50 members of Saint Katharine Drexel Youth Ministry and Parishioners attended the annual Texas Rally for Life in Austin on January 23, 2010.

Tx ProLife Rally

Tx ProLife Rally

The Emcee for the event was State Senator Dan Patrick. Monsignor Michael Mulvey, Bishop-Elect of the Diocese of Corpus Christi offered the invocation. Governor Rick Perry gave the Keynote and speakers included: State Representative, Frank Corte; Carol Everett, Founder and CEO, The Heidi Group and Former Abortion Facility Owner; Joe Pojman, PhD, Executive Director, Texas Alliance For Life; Cathy Kerr, Witness with Silent No More Awareness; and Elizabeth McClung, Coalition for life, 40 Days for Life. The Benediction was given by Rev. David Cassidy, Senior Pastor, Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Austin.

Thousands of Texans marched 10 blocks from Republic Square to the South Steps of the Capital building chanting “Hey hey ho ho Roe V Wade has got to go”. There were not as many pro-abortion demonstrators along the parade route as in past years, but as Rally goers entered the Capital grounds we were met by a small number of pro-abortion advocates.

To see photos of the rally, go to our Facebook page.

For more information on the Texas Rally for Life, visit their website.

Mark your calendars: The 2011 Texas Rally for Life will be held on January 22, 2011, the actual anniversary of Roe v. Wade!
