Cinco de Mayo Celebration huge success!

St Katharine Drexel Church completed its gala Cinco de Mayo weekend with a Dance at the KC Hall on Friday and a Fiesta at the church grounds on Sunday.

The Dance featured the selection of the Cinco de Mayo Queen Laura Tapia and princesses Rosa Bañuelos and Viviane Romero. Music for the occasion was provided by three bands: Corazon de Fuego, The Panthers of Guerrero, and Group Descendencia. Local parish members prepared Mexican food during the dance under the direction of Lourdes Melchor. The Fiesta started with a parade through Hempstead lead by Chief Lacamu and two fire trucks, and was conducted by Police Chief David Hartley. Approximately 50 horses participated in the march from City Hall to the church grounds on FM1488, along with the Cinco de Mayo royalty, antique cars, and floats with dancers and children. For the day, local parishioners prepared a varied menu of Hispanic food items, including fajitas, gorditas, tongue tacos, and many others. Many booths and games lined the midway in the church parking lot, with separate play areas for toddlers and kids. The church hall held the Loteria game and silent auction. DJ Candido DeLaRosa provided entertainment for the event that included folk dances, singers, and a Chihuahua race. Festivities ended with a street dance and a brilliant fireworks display by Mr. B’s. The Cinco de Mayo committee thanks all for their support in making the weekend a great success.
